I live near a town of several thousand people in France. This morning I came across an elderly couple of tourists trying to change a 500 euro note which all the banks in town (BNP, Societe Generale, etc) had refused. The Post Office and shops had refused too because it is a lot of money and there are forgeries about.
In France, notes no higher than 50 euros are preferred though some places will accept 100 euro notes.

A very useful warning - I personally avoid anything larger than a 100 note for exactly this reason.
If you use your ATM for small amounts you will usually get 20 Euro notes but if exchanging money at your bank ahead of your trip specify small notes.

Many shops have signs at the check-out that say notes of 500 will only be accepted for purchases that total more than 250 euros.
I%26#39;ve never had the 500 note problem as I always take my cash from the ATM machine. Even when withdrawing say 800 euros, the machine always gives 50s and/or 20%26#39;s. Some machines will give 10%26#39;s, but round here, they are hard to find.
Sometimes even getting 50%26#39;s accepted can be a challenge !
