Is France getting Fat?

Interesting article I read in today%26#39;s L.A Times titled %26quot;In France, fat makes an entree%26quot;:

Yes. You see much larger people, and larger sizes, there today than you did 10 - 20 years ago. But still, they are rather small in comparison to other nations.

|||

Don%26#39;t worry, the States is still number one( at least in this area) ! LOL

I am sure in these days of conveinence foods and fast food places ALL nations are getting fatter.

Yes, as always American habits come via the UK first, with the result that we are now roughly in between the States and the rest of Europe when it comes to obesity rates. The rest of Europe now seems to be going the same way.

It was the same with the anti-smoking campaign, first the States, then the UK and now the rest of the Continent. Strange that the two phenomena have run concurrently.

We were in Lyon a few months ago. The people there are the skinniest I have ever seen anywhere, despite Lyon being the gastronomic capital of France. We decided to count the next 20 people that we came accross on the street... men and women on an average day. . It wasn%26#39;t until we got to number 14 that we came accross a woman who was a bit overweight... not huge by any means, perhaps a UK size 16. There were no other overweight people in the 20 that we counted.

great observations! I really didn%26#39;t have a strong opinion when I read the story. If anything, it saddened me.

Super-sizing is becoming a world-wide phenomenon.

It%26#39;s not necessarily that they are %26quot;fat%26quot;, but that the average woman%26#39;s size is larger today than it was years back, and same for men. I have a French girlfriend in the states, and she is a wee bit on the heavy side. She says that in the past decade, every time she returns to France, she sees more and more women like her and feels less out of the ordinary. So it%26#39;s comparing French today with French of yesterday.

They all seemed pretty slim to me. In 24 hours there I only saw two fat people, American tourists. The reason they are so slim there is, well, must be the cost of food....LOL

Yes, you do see more and more fat folks here. I notice it a lot. I especially notice more and more fat kids... Processed foods must play into this. I see more and more processed foods in the supermarket these days. And French kids are just like other kids, they love crisps, cookies, chocolate breakfast cereals, etc.

Funny the comment on the cost of food. I was just saying yesterday that with French lamb costing anywhere between 15 and 26 euros per kilo (depending upon the cut) veal around the same price, calves liver at 26 euros per kilo - yes I said 26 euros.... it really goes a long way in making you a vegetarian.
