Hi all,
Thinking of a trip to the Loire Valley, staying in Amboise. Can anyone give me an idea of what the area is like, where to eat and what to expect to pay?
Thank you!

Stayed there just last week for 4 days. There are good restaurants with all price ranges. Some open only during the day, some only at night and others are open all the time--usually with a little break. If you go out to dinner at 6, most will either not be open or tell you to come back at 7 or 7:30 which is when they start serving dinner. They usually stay open until about 10.
On the main street right behind the castle, there are bars, gelato shops, Italian, Chinese, French and International restaurants. I never had either a good or bad experience worth mentioning or either recommending or not recommending any of them.

Without question , the usually very busy %26quot;L%26#39;Amboiserie%26quot; restaurant is the best place to eat dinner. The %26quot;Bigot%26quot; teahouse/pattisserie/chocolatier is a good spot for lunch. The %26quot;Hotel Le Blason%26quot; has a very good restaurant for breakfast and dinner as well. Dinner is about the same prices as Paris , a little more expensive than in some other French regions (like the Dordogne for instance).
Click the %26quot;Amboise Attractions%26quot; tab here on TA as well as , www.virtualtourist.com/amboise/loire for area sights . descriptions, reviews, pictures etc.
This entire area is a beautiful and terrific place to visit --- castles a plenty , troglodyte dwellings etc.

In that case iot should be avoided. Meal Prices in the region are about 40% lower than in Paris overall.
Amboise is not the best place in the Loire Valley to stay IMHO. A lot of tourists stay there, but I couldn%26#39;t honestly tell you why. As a result of the tourists the restaurants tend to be not all that good - and evidently expensive. There is nowhere in Amboise listed in Routard, which is a worry.

Oh Wiz, why don%26#39;t yopu like Amboise :-(
I agree it%26#39;s very touristy and as a result overpriced but I still find the area charming and certainly worth a visit.
BTW, I want to head over to Preuilly sur Claise in the next couple of weeks, it looks lovely.

imiss
I dont dislike Amboise at all - but I do dislike the attitude of some of the business owners.
I will be in Preuilly from the 16 - 30 June. Recommended eating place is www.bottingourmand.com/bg_fiche.php…
He has a Michelin star, and is not at all expensive - 38€ the 2 course menu (read 6 courses, including the amuse bouche)

Thanks for that :-}

Wizard: %26quot;re. Amboise is not the best place in the Loire Valley to stay IMHO%26quot;
Can you suggest some places that are good/better? Any places where one can rely on public transportation to get tours or to get around, or is does relying on Public Transportation defeat the purpose of going to the Loire?

I%26#39;m with Wiz -- I wouldn%26#39;t want to stay in Amboise for my entire holiday, but it%26#39;s pretty and centrally located, has a good marche, several supermarches, a good-sized poste, a good laverie....most of the things you need 5-7 days into a good holiday -- about the time your trousers begin to walk around on their own!
A walk along the river is a great way to kill a couple of hours -- the Loire is lovely in that area.

There was a thread about this earlier ; http://tinyurl.com/2ozymv
Should give you an idea of my thoughts :)
