Hotel des grandes ecoles

hi all, any feedback regarding this hotel.

we are planning on booking a quad room for our family of four in jan.

many thx blonder

Hi Blonder

It is a lovely hotel - I have not stayed but I went to look at the garden a few years ago and to get a brochure. The large garden tucked away off the street is beautiful although it will be winter when you are there. A friend of mine has kept going back since her first stay in the early 1990s and many on this forum are repeat visitors. There are no TVs which might be relevant to your children. You can start booking for January from this Saturday, 15 September, and if you decide to stay I would book quickly as it is very popular and there are not that many rooms that will sleep 4.

The location is good, on a hill a few blocks up from Place Maubert (which has good patisserie and other food shops and also has a market on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings) and also just a bit downhill from the start of the famous rue Mouffetard (try to go on a Sunday in the middle of the day as there are street performers) and also the Place de la Contrescarpe.

In case you have not seen them, here is the link to the TA hotel reviews

If you search for %26quot;Grandes Ecoles%26quot; on this forum (upper right above the forum questions) you will find many previous discussions on the forum about the hotel, including this long one in which kdks said he thought we should keep it quiet for fear that those who love it already will not be able to get a room in future.

Hi Blonder, not personally but again there are fans on TA Paris who have posted in the past about them, particularly the evening ones. Do a search of %26quot;fat tire%26quot; (US spelling I think) on the forum search box.

The nicest and most charming hotel I have stayed in

during my 5 visits to Paris.

This is a fairly common reaction from past guests...who continue to %26#39;..vote..%26#39; for this great little 3-star with their wallets. Frankly, most would prefer it if no one ever mentioned this little hotel...so there%26#39;d be availability when they call to book their next visit. The hotel had a three month maximum on advance reservations policy, which still appears to be in effect (they used to be even more selective than this by only accepting reservations by phone only between 2-6 PM...but I think this policy has changed)....but I recommend that you reserve as early as possible for the %26#39;Quad%26#39;.

I saw the %26#39;..Quad..%26#39; room at the Grandes Ecoles, several years ago...and though the decor may have changed, the room hasn%26#39;t. The %26#39;Quad%26#39; was a large Double...with a standard double bed and a pull-out sofa / sleeper bed to accommodate four(4) guests. With the sofa / sleeper folded up, there%26#39;s plenty of room for four to %26#39;..swing a cat...%26#39;...but as you might expect, floor space shrinks with the sofa-sleeper pulled out. There%26#39;s a large window with walk-out balcony, overlooking the lovely courtyard (in an past age, it was a convent).

Should the %26#39;Quad%26#39; at the Grandes Ecoles not be available, check out the %26#39;Quads%26#39; at the FAMILIA HÔTEL (a few blocks north). The down-side to the Familia is that it does not have A/C, which may be a consideration if yours is to be a high / summer season visit...and it doesn%26#39;t have the great courtyard that the Grandes Ecoles has. But the %26#39;Quads%26#39; here are roomy. The %26#39;Quad%26#39; on the top floor (#6

hi. thx for your response. have managed to book the quad room, with a double and 2 singles. would you recommend the breakfast or are the local bars/cafes a better option ??

thx blonder

|||

At 8 €uro per person for a Continental breakfast of croissant, bread, butter, jam %26amp; coffee...you can do better in any local café....but truth be told I can%26#39;t recall any specific one in the immediate neighborhood...though given that Place de la Contrescarpe is kust down the block, there are a few likely places around this well known spot.

I do recall a good little modestly priced restaurant in the neighborhood---RESTAURANT AU MOULIN A VENT - 20 rue des Fossés Saint-Bernard (just up the block)--http://www.au-moulinavent.com/ (also known sometimes as Chez Henri)

I love that sweet little hotel... January maybe a bad month for the cute little garden tho!

There are several places to catch a breakfast around there plus two grocery stores for items.

The ham and cheese and egg crepes are great ! too!

Hi blonder, I%26#39;ve never stayed at the Grandes Ecoles, but did walk by as I was staying nearby and noticed the garden from the street. It sure looked lovely as others described. The area is one of my favorites. You will really enjoy your visit even though it%26#39;ll be January. Yes. It is typically very cold and rainy, but you may get lucky and it%26#39;ll be sunny and dry. However, there is always something to do and see in Paris no matter what the weather is like.
