We will be in Marseille one day in October and want advise of what to do. Wineries, Avignon? Would like to do something other than booking a shore excursion from the ship.

You might see something of Marseille. It%26#39;s a beautiful city with much of interest; you could perhaps book a car and driver for a city tour. How much total time do you have? You could also take the train to Aix-en-Provence, a lovely city to wander in and closer than Avignon.

We will be there a full day. we are on a cruise.

In that case, take a morning train to Aix-en-Provence and spend half the day there, including lunch. Then return to Marseille and explore the area around the old port, perhaps taking the boat trip out to the Château d%26#39;If, of %26quot;The Count of Monte Cristo%26quot; fame. Go up to the church of Notre-Dame de la Garde; the parking area has incredible views of the sea and the surrounding countryside, and the church is full of ex-votos presented by sailors.
You can get a walking guide at the tourist office, just up from the old port.

Thank you for your information, It was very helpful.

Are there any good wineries in that area?

Yes, in the area of Cassis and especially Bandol (fine dry rosés, the summer drink in Provence, and excellent reds). But I don%26#39;t know whether there%26#39;s any good public transport.
