Phone service

What is the least expensive method to call the US in the event of an emergency.

The least expensive is VoIP from your laptop, free for calls from computer to computer using an Internet connection. Calls to US phones run under 2 cents a minute with services such as Skype or Gizmo Project.

More conventionally, I like using a télécarte sold in magazine stores and tabacs for about 14 euros (in 120 unit form, smaller size also available).

They work from any telephone in France. Rates per minute vary, weekends being the least costly.
