Bringing french wine into Canada

There has been some discussion about this in this forum on this topic over the years, but I never found the answer to my question. I finally found the answer elsewhere. So in case someone has the same question, here you go...

You may bring into Canada:

1.5 liters of wine or 1.14 liters of spirits or 24 355 ml (12-ounce) cans/bottles of beer without having to pay duty, taxes, or mark-up.

BUT (what I%26#39;ve always wanted to know is) EXACTLY how much are those duties/taxes/mark ups if I do bring in excess?

It varies from province to province, Alberta being much cheaper than Quebec. It also varies from province to province how much you can bring into the country even if you do pay duties. In Quebec you can only bring 9 litres, but I think you can bring 40 into Ontario.

The taxes and duties can add up to more than 100% of the price of the wine.

For a break down and explanation of taxes and duties on booze in Quebec visit:

go to SAQ at a Glance %26gt; business practices %26gt;travel abroad (from menu bottom of the page)

Perhaps other people can post info from other provinces.

the information is readily available from the website of respective provincial liquor boards, and customs... or more easily, a phone call to the local customs office.

Since I couldn%26#39;t find the Ontario tax/duty info on the Ontario Liquor board website, I don%26#39;t think we can call the information %26quot;readily available%26quot;. Bob, perhaps you could be a dear, and post the link. Cheers.

Ever since the new no liquids in carry on luggage rule this is a moot point to me. I won%26#39;t pack wine in my luggage as I refuse to have red wine soaked clothes .

What%26#39;s the point really. As nice as a bottle of French wine would be you could never capture the feeling of sipping it in the country in which it was made. I plan to enjoy it there and bring the memories back with me.

Joan, the answer is to pack white wine in your luggage - or take red clothes on holiday! LOL

SMF -

I don%26#39;t know what the fine points are currently for BC, but I do know that if you have a dear friend who owns a licensed restaurant, you might be able to prevail upon that person to add your chosen wines to their import order to the LCB for French wines, and simply reimburse when they arrive. This is something that I can no longer do as my dear friend has gone on to the great French restaurant in the sky, but it used to work quite nicely.
