Hello
I am thinking of going to Avignon during the July Arts Festival. Has anyone done this as I am wondering what it is like and just how busy and crowded is the town whilst it is on. The upside and the downside to going at the same time basically.
- Thanks for your help
- Thanks David

It is EXTREMELY crowded in July. There is so much going on in Avignon in the month of July, I do my best to avoid it at all costs.
Parking is horrible, traffic same.
The art and theatre shows gets good and bad reviews, depending on the year. Overall, I think it is pretty good.
If you don%26#39;t mind crowds, then go for it. If crowds really bother you, I%26#39;d consider another time.

I agree with toutou. We went for a day this July - I used to live nearby and was looking forward to showing off the city to the family. There looked to be a lot of lively activity, but the only parking we could find was nearly a mile from the Palais des Papes and we had to give it a miss as one of the party couldn%26#39;t walk that far. We went to Villeneuve instead and had one of the worst meals I%26#39;ve ever had in France ... anyway, it wasn%26#39;t a successful day and we decided not to try to return either :-(
It%26#39;s probably OK if you like crowds and buzz and don%26#39;t need to park. You could travel by direct Eurostar and stay in the city itself?

And if you do stay in the city itself, be sure to reserve your accommodations as far in advance as possible so as to get the type of accommodations that suit you.

Hello
- Thanks for the responses - I think I will reconsider and stay in mid September as an alternative

Mid september is a much nicer time to visit Provence. I agree that July is probably the worse month in Avignon unless you like a lot of people!

Yes, September is perfect.
Escargot - I can tell the main season is coming to a close as you are posting again. Hope you enjoyed a good season. Glad to see you back.

I agree totally with all the comments about Avignon in July - especially during the festival week - this year I was lucky enough to get a car park in the underground park under the Palais de Papes but thought I was doomed to spend the rest of my life trying to get out such was the congestion.
That said we enjoy the atmosphere and the street theatre and will no doubt return again next year (we have a friend who has a working WW2 armoured car which I might borrow just to make the parking easier...)

Just to emphasis it is VERY VERY Crowded indeed at that time.
Having said that we really did enjoy the street theatre which is all over town and the atmosphere is excellent.
You can park just before the bridge coming from the direction of Villeneuve and use park and ride. That was not too traumatic even in July and certainly preferable that going right into Avignon or even trying to park against it%26#39;s walls.
If you don%26#39;t mind crowds and enjoy that type of lively interesting atmosphere then don%26#39;t be put off.
We do like September in Provence though and have just returned this week.
