can anyone recommend places around Marseille for a 5 days trip? (2 girls early thirties) landing in M, but heard the city is not the best to stay, so would like to go further to a place to experience some beach life, and also be able to go out on bars and nice restaurants at night. Not planning on renting a car, but will use trains, busses etc. As we have never been in the aea before, would appreciate any experiences and ideas!

You would be happier with a car if possible - You can get to so many places with one on your own schedule.
We asyed in both Arles and Aix; we liked Aix for the Cours Mirable area (if you don%26#39;t have a car you should plan to stay near there. ) We did however much prefer Arles as a base for the area - we did have a car though.

thanks, Janeharriet, we might consider renting a car then. Thought it could be nice not having to worry about parking. Are you familiar with the riviera villages like cassis or bandol?

We did a day trip to Cassis - a beautiful seaside town and we thouroughly enjoyed it. There are clifff walks/drives you can do as well as boat trips alond the cliff coasts. There are interesting shops/cafes lining the marina area
We did not go to Bandol. We did go to Aigues Mortes (not a beach town but there is a wounderful ancient castle/tower with a great walk around the ramparts and up the tower - great views. From there we drove down to the ocean to a beach town where we had lunch overlooking the ocean/port.

I would support having a car - you will miss so much without it.
Personally I am not a great lover of some of the coastal towns near Marseille - Cassis excepted and a couple of the small resorts to the west of Marseille.
I would consider basing yourself in Arles or Avignon and visiting the area.
Arles has a lot of roman artefacts, loads of pavement cafe/bars and restaurants. There is central secure parking too. Very busy Saturday market .
From there you can visit the Camargue with its fantastic beaches, Aigues Morts (as previously mentioned) and St Remy and the Alpilles (often overlooked as a place to visit).
Avignon is further inland but again if you pick a central hotel there is a central secure underground park (I thought last week I was going to be stuck in it for life as it was so busy).
You do not have too long otherwise I would suggest two nights in each place.

how difficult is it to drice in Provence area if you%26#39;ve never been there and you only know a bit of French?

Driving in Provence is not difficult as long as you take the time to learn about the road signs and how to navigate a roundabout.
About Aix: beautiful city, especially along the Cours Mirabeau, but parking is hellish.
