phillipe chapon tamarillos restaurant

i and my fiance had the worst dining experience at this restaurant.

we decided to divert our holiday to experience the unusual food combinations of mr chapon.

as this was going to be a once in a lifetime meal we ordered the very best off his menu being 90 euros per head. to compliment this meal we ordered two bottles of bollinger total bill being 340 euros.

the evening got off to a bad enough start when the first course arrived in the form of an oyster with a fish sauce in a shot glass. my fiance oyster was bad and needless to say everything from this moment went down hill as when the waitress was informed of the oyster being off all she could do was shrug!!!!

before the next course arrived the carrafe de eau, water was spilt down the front of my fiances blouse again the same waitress in question was nonchalant. not once were our glasses every refilled at anytime through out the meal no explnation of the food was given throughout the meal even in french. the food was brought out and just dumped in front of us the waitress could see our glassses were empty and simply turned tail and walked away.

the food was terrible it is stuck in the 80s there were only 5 couples eating here at the height of the season on a saturday night with no atmosphere!!!!!!! when we complained to mr chapon he shrugged and first offered us a glass of wine which was refused he explained that his staff were students and what did we expect.

we asked for the bill which we waited 15 mins for and it still had not arrived so i left what i thought was a reasonable of money on the table this being 250 euros and the address of the hotel we were staying at and left.

at 12.30 am we were awoken by the hotel to be told mr chapon was at reception demanding to see us and that he was threating to phone the police over an unpaid bill.

on going down to reception and again explaing to mr chapon in front of the hotel staff in the sofitel that we left 250 euros at the table which we deemed fair

he called us lairs called my fiance an f!!!ing b!!!h and said nobody f!!ks me over

to which he was politley removed from the hotel by the staff needless to say the police never arrived either

but the following day an english friend of mr chapon rung through to the hotel and threatened us!!!!!

alll in all a horrible experience rude arrogant mr chapon whose food is mediocre his staff or very poor DO NOT EAT THERE

We visited this restaurant in August this year and had a completely different experience. Our first experience was like the sort you%26#39;d like to bottle so we went back before we left Monpellier and since then we have raved about both experiences to our family, friends and colleagues. Mid week it was busy but at the weekend there were no covers other than for those people who had booked.

We have been going to France for going on 17yrs and every year we manage to find a gem and this year, this restaurant, these meals made it to the top of our list of %26#39;peak experiences%26#39;. The services on both evenings was attentive but not intrusive, a bit slower on the Sat evening when it was busier.

The meal, although not a 90 euro set meal of eight/nine courses, was a la carte and four courses of exquisite cuisine that you cannot find anywhere - a work of art both in its presentation and combination -(chocolate sauce with fois gras really does work in a way that is hard to imagine!) The oyster milk was something we had never tried before, and I suppose, like Marmite, it%26#39;s a love or hate thing, we loved it!! Don%26#39;t say you are a choc-a-holic until you taste this man%26#39;s fruit sorbet! The whole menu was inspired!

I%26#39;m sure we could go on and on! Depending on your menu the cost will vary but you only get what you pay for and we felt treated. Try it for yourself and hopefully you%26#39;ll have a similar fantastic experience like ours.

Mr Chapon, THANK YOU and we will be back, of that we are not in doubt!

Interesting post.

Personally, I would not have left the restaurant without finding the owner and paying for my meal. That is just me. I am not really surprised the owner showed up at your Hotel. As you said, you left the information about where you could be found. Were the prices not on the menu when you ordered?

Also interesting the second post on this thread. Both posts are from first time posters.

We%26#39;ve just returned to our hotel after a very special meal at Tamarillo. It%26#39;s hard for us to believe that this restaurant is the same one which has drawn to terrible review posted here. We can understand someone finding Mr Chapon%26#39;s style and emphasis perhaps not to their liking (although it was to ours - and very much so) but our waitress was wonderful, very skilled and totally charming, the food was truly different and to our minds very special, and Mr Chapon was charming as well.

We will definitely return and we will tell our friends of our very special evening.

Our suggestion is to try not to be put off by the adverse review listed here.

I have just eaten in Tamarillos. I was the only customer in the restaurant at the time but I found it a very pleasant experience. The waitress was charming and phillipe chapon even came out to say hello.

I%26#39;m a little surprsed by the earlier post. However, its possible that Davidfet had too high expectations of his visit, the staff were poor on the night and things spiralled from there. I would recommend that people try this place. The food is unusual and worth experiencing.
