Travel Insurance

I leave October 16 on my 8 day trip to Paris. I am renting an apartment. What do you think about travel insurance? My concerns are if the plane gets delayed or cancelled, and I have already paid half on the apartment. I really cannot afford to loose money.

I always buy travel insurance. For me, it%26#39;s Must Do. Chances are in your favor, that you won%26#39;t have to use it. This is a short list of what is covered:

- Trip Cancellation: Note: only up to $800USD

- Medical Expense ...up to $5000USD

- Accidental Death..up to $250,000 (plane crash?)

- Emergency Repatriation ( returning your remains) $15,000

-Loss, Theft or Damage to personal effects -$1000 (laptop?)

My travel insurance is through AIG. If you have pre-existing medical conditions, this can compromise your coverage(medical).

In addition, you get a contact phone number to assist you in the following areas:

- Help finding alternative flights

- Lost luggage

- Emergency cash transfer: e.g. you lose your credit card/ATM card

- Medical and Dental recommendations (whichever country your in)

- Legal Assistance

- Lost Travel Document Assistance ( lose your passport?)

They offer multi-lingual assistance, which means you can explain your situation in English and they will act as a liason (translator) to medical/legal/whatever personnel.

The only alarming fact that I can think of is that you shouldn%26#39;t assume payment is made immediately because you have insurance. The treating facility can hold your passport until services are paid. You may have to pay and request reimbursement from the insurance company later.

I am not an insurane agent, I am reading off the policy I bought for my travels to France in October. I am a conservative business person that believes in protecting my assets and my loved ones. My

family members get a copy of the policy and I explain the benefits before I depart so they are able to collect.

Hope this helps.

We always get medical insurance when we travel. Period.

Cancellation insurance we sometimes get ( like when my mom was sick and we worried we might have to cut our trip short etc).

I am not sure about which airline you are using, but I was under the assumption if a plane gets cancelled they put you on another one don%26#39;t they? I wouldn%26#39;t worry about losing a day out of my trip( but I would hate it) ,, so I guess the best answer is go to a travel agent and have them explain what types of insurance they offer and the what are the policy limits. We use Travelguard or RBC,, each is different. Good luck and don%26#39;t worry too much!

We always buy TravelGuard Insurance ( I think it is now under AIG) directly from the company...they have several different plans and the cost is cheaper and better coverage than thru a travel agent.

If you do a search on this site you will get lots of advice.

I have had great luck with them paying out for loss!

We were in Europe in June. Our flight from Paris to Vienna was cancelled due to inclement weather and the next flight was two days later with the same airline, an this, in effect, totally ruined our trip to Vienna. It was late at night and about 150 people were left to desperately scramble. Fortunately, we were able to get a room at the Paris hotel we had stayed at. We took the train to Germany the next day. As we had purchased travel insurance, we were later reimbursed for all costs: bus to hotel, extra restaurant meal, hotel costs and train fare to Germany, all in all about $1000. Bottom line: don%26#39;t ever travel without it!!!

Thank you all for your feedback. I will definately be getting the travel insurance. Any suggstions on min. amount. I have paid 250euro on the apartment already. I used skymiles on the airline ticket (although I had to buy $500 worth of miles). I was thinking $1000. Your thoughts?

|||

Insure any amount you would be out if you had to cancel. I%26#39;ve used travelex insurance and they have been great when we%26#39;ve had to use the policy. They also cover kids at no additional cost. Their pre-existing medical clause is null if you buy the insurance within 21 days of purchase of your trip (tickets). You can get different coverage for different things (cancellation, medical etc.)

ok. thanks

I read up on mediac waiver and have a question. We have trip to paris in December. Our airline tix purchased back in July so we are past the 15 or 21 day purchase clause, depending on which company we pick.

What if my dad (nontraveler)dies or has surgery related to his preexisting heart disease is the coverage for trip interuption null and void?

Sorry if this seems simple. Hubby and I cannot agree.

TIA

Be sure to check out the insuremytrip.com web site, where you can find comparative charts about various companies and their coverages.

%26quot;Chrismom%26quot; : you need to ask that question to each of the companies you are considering.

The 15 - 20 days for yourself is for pre-existing conditions.

The clause for death of a (non Traveler) family member needs to be read ...wording on the contract. Most reps. will explain if it does or does cover that.
