I am putting together a flexible itinerary of the following:
2 nights Arles; 1 n St Tropez area; 1n Nice area; 1n Moustiers Ste Marie; 1n Biancon area; 2n Annecy; 2n Beaune; 2n Strasbourg; 1-2n Reims
I have done the via michelin as reco%26#39;d many times in this forum...
but does anyone have reco%26#39;s for changes in itinerary or for which small towns around the places noted as %26quot;area%26quot; might be nice to stay in? Hotel, restaurant, sites etc reco%26#39;s are also welcome for all points along the way!
Thanks so much, and I thoroughly expect you all to tell me this is too much! :-)

One night in Arles and two in Nice would be my main recommendation.

Yes my first reaction is that it is too much then I thought that perhaps you just like driving:-)
You need at least two nights in the Arles area.
I would %26quot;call in%26quot; on St Tropez on route to Nice and spend two nights there.
I have trouble with the second part from Briancon to Reims especially the Beaune, Strasburg, Reims bit - that is a lot of driving.
If your objective is a whistle stop tour of France (been there, got the T shirt etc.) then you will do this but I doubt you will see and feel the real France as you rush from place to place.
Do less and see more!
I would be inclined to decide which area you really want to see and concentrate your holiday there for this trip and save the other for another holiday.
Provence and all it has to offer is worth two weeks by itself.

When are you planning to do this ??
In November 1 hour St Tropez in June 2 nights !!

If I was to narrow down a bit, and skip a region, would you take out the Briancon and Annecy (i.e., Alpes) part of the itinerary, or the Alsace areas? Or both?
What if we could stay longer in Provence, Burgundy and a couple nights in Champagne territory?
Have suggestions for time lengths in each place and must sees in each region? I know you Provence peeps would just stay there, and I probably could, but I have to keep in mind my traveling companions as well.
We are three 30 something women traveling from 17 Apr - 4 May. We intend to spend 3 nights in Paris and the TGV from Paris to Avignon. We will definitely rent a car so we need to know our end destination for dropping the car to make our reservation.
Thanks!

Personally I would drop Alsace and (this one reluctantly) the Alps.
I would concentrate on Provence, the Rhone valley, Beaune and Reims/champagne.
I would start the trip by going to Nice and working backwards towards the Avignon/Arles region.
It is then an easy drive up the Rhone valley stopping off in Lyon - a delightful city in the centre - to Burgundy then Reims and perhaps dropping your car off at your departure airport?
Happy to provide some hotels from Avignon upwards depending on your budget.

Boucheboy -
Thanks for the advice! I hate to leave the Alps out too, but maybe in April it won%26#39;t be too great of weather to be there anyway? I abandon our home in the Rocky mountains that time of year, it is mostly a muddy mess from the snow melt...
We would definitely take hotel, restaurant and site seeing reco%26#39;s for any of the areas left on the list. We are trying to stay fairly %26quot;frugal%26quot; and would look for hotels %26lt;100E a night. Meals... we would like to eat where the locals eat as much as possible and stay away from the tourist places. We will likely do a splurge dinner in each region, and likely many picnics for lunches.
We are all physically active so if you can suggest any hikes or walks or even nice areas to rent a bike for a few hours and tour around that would be great! Was eyeing a hike near Cassis and also sounded like some options around the Gorde du Verdon.
Also interested in markets, wine, cheese and art!
Thanks so much. If it is easier to email me, I am at roma@infinity.aero.

Can I also suggest you post enquiries in the specific area forums as there are several contributors who will be better able to deal with some of your queries re e.g. bike rides.
I would post in the Nice, Avignon,Arles, Beaune and Reims forums.
For example there are some good suggestions for B%26amp;B rooms on the Avignon forum (they look to me as good as a hotel room)- ask Toutou for her fact sheet - see posts on that forum.
One association of hotels to start looking at is the Logis de France - smaller hotels in towns and villages.

PS you are right about the Alps - late May onwards is a better time to see them without snow etc.
Good luck with the planning.

Thanks again boucheboy!
