hotel area advice please

Hi all. I am going over to Paris for the first time for some of the rugby and am lost with choosing a hotel district. I would like to see some of the tourist sights of Paris while I am there but do not want to pay the earth for a hotel. Any suggestions of reasonable locations and/ or hotels anyone? Thanks for any suggestions.

We very much liked staying in Monternasse, it is quieter than the central tourist locations, but still bustling and well linked to everything. We stayed within walking distance of the Gare du Montpernasse and that has Metro lines to almost all the big sights of the city. Plus, although it is close to the Luxemborg Gardens/Latin Quarter part of Paris it is a lot cheaper, usually.

Hotel Vivienne, in the Grands Boulevards area.
