end of april in provence and avignon - lodging

Hi,

I am planning a week-long driving trip in the area at the end of April.

Will it be OK I just book my lodging when I get there through local tourism office? I found from the past experience that I often get nice and inexpensive places that does not have website booking from these local tourism office. My concern is if there is a chance that I can%26#39;t get lodging.

Thanks for any input.

Wanderfree2 - you could do that. Don%26#39;t forget that the last two weeks of April are the Easter school break in the Provence region, so lots of French families will be holidaying here and there.

We had some friends visit us that went on to a different part of France thinking they could do exactly what you plan to do - only they didn%26#39;t have a car, so were even more limited - they found even the tourist office couldn%26#39;t find them a place to stay. So, sometimes this works, other times it doesn%26#39;t. Really just a matter of the draw.

If one tourist office says they can find nothing available, you can always ask them to contact a nearby tourist office that might have something to offer - say Avignon tourist office can%26#39;t find you anything - but perhaps the Carpentras tourist office can, etc. You would need a car though.

Thanks so much. I was not aware of the last two weeks are holidays there. Your post has been a big help!

Wanderfree2,

Just wondering how your experience went during your visit? My girlfriends and I (3 of us) were planning to free form our trip during the last two weeks of April 2008, but would like to know if you had problems finding accomodations? We will be renting a car and making our way from Avignon to Nice over a three or four day time period.

Thanks!

But Easter is in March in 2008. Does that mean that the vacation is STILL the last two weeks of April, or does it move up earlier? I am also interested in going to Provence the end of April 2008, but not if it%26#39;s a big tourist time.

April is not nearly as bad as June July and August as far as tourists go.

It still can encompass school holidays and the French do like to head South. But, that shouldn%26#39;t stop you from coming. I wouldn%26#39;t want to arrive with no place to stay though.

The school district for Avignon is Category B. I live in this district. Our schools are on break from April 5 to April 21, 2008.

Thank you for the specific dates; we wouldn%26#39;t arrive until the 21st of April so that would work out well!

Hello, I would not want to spend my time on a trip like this looking for a place to sleep. Look in travel guides and the web before you go. Planning for me is half the fun of traveling. We have chosen many wonderful towns in Provence just by reading in several travel guides-some from the library-good reading in January in Maine. The guides are very reliable and they describe the different areas. For example, sleeping in a perched village in April is very quiet- but we read that it would be. Another thought is that you wouldn%26#39;t want to drive after you have had wine with your dinner, so it would be necessary to stay in the town where you eat. For a trip on that date, you can reserve a room in your chosen hotel in the town you picked 2 months in advance and feel assured that you have a place to stay. I have only had one experience out of many hotels in Provence where my advance choice was not what the guides promised. Luckily, was only one night! The rest have been outstanding and bettenews, they were very inexpensive.

Thanks for the advice. I have read in many guide books that finding lodging as you go and not being on a schedule can be a great time. We will likely do something in between and maybe book something a couple days ahead of where we want to end up.

Our plan is not to plan too much and just go where the wind blows us... If we are having a great time in a certain place we don%26#39;t want to feel pressure to leave, but I also don%26#39;t want to spend alot of evenings looking for rooms.

Hi

If it is any help the end of April and the beginning of May are already filling up in our chambre d%26#39;hote. I would certainly suggest that you have your accomodation booked before you leave to avoid dissappointment. It is always the nicest places that get booked up first!
